How long do RC car batteries last?
Two different questions with the same wording: how long one charge lasts, and how long the battery itself lasts. Here are honest answers to both.

A typical RC car battery gives 15 to 30 minutes of driving per charge, and takes one to four hours to recharge. The pack itself lasts two to four years with reasonable care, or a single season if it is stored fully charged and run completely flat repeatedly.

That crawler row is worth noticing: if run time is what matters most to you, a rock crawler will run for an afternoon while a brushless truck is on its third charge.
The four things that shorten a charge
- Throttle use. Full throttle everywhere can halve a session. Nothing else comes close to this factor.
- Weight and terrain. Long grass and mud draw far more current than a smooth path.
- Cold weather. Both chemistries deliver less in the cold. A pack that gives 25 minutes in summer may give 18 in winter.
- Pack age. Capacity falls gradually over the life of a battery, so an old pack simply runs shorter.
How long the battery itself lasts
- LiPo: two to four years, if stored at a partial charge and never run completely flat. Stored full for months, one season.
- NiMH: three to five years of light use. More tolerant, but it loses capacity gradually whatever you do.
- The warning sign for a LiPo is swelling. A pack that has puffed is finished — stop using it and dispose of it properly.
- The warning sign for NiMH is a very short run time that does not improve after a full charge cycle.

LiPo is the standard rechargeable battery chemistry for RC cars: lighter than the older NiMH type and it holds its power right up to the end of the run rather than gradually fading. 2S means two cells — the size most 1/10 cars take.
What it does well
- Consistent pack-to-pack quality, which is the whole argument for paying more for a battery
- Holds voltage under load, so the car feels the same on lap ten as on lap one
- Sold in all the common connector types and sizes
What it does badly
- Costs more than the budget brands for capacity you can measure but may not notice
- Like all LiPo packs it must be stored at partial charge, not full, or it degrades
- Needs a balance charger — it cannot be charged with the wall plug from a toy car

#2 · Two packs, low spend

Sold in twos for about what one premium pack costs — the reason so many garages have a stack of them.

The budget end of the LiPo market, usually sold as a two-pack. For a gift where the goal is more driving time rather than maximum performance, two adequate batteries beat one excellent one.
What it does well
- Two-packs at a price that makes a spare battery an easy decision
- Perfectly adequate for bashing, which is what most of these cars do
- Widely stocked in the common sizes
What it does badly
- Pack-to-pack consistency is not at the level of the premium brands
- They tend to age faster if they are stored fully charged — which beginners do
- Not the choice for racing

#3 · Families new to this
Traxxas Power Cell NiMH battery
Slower and heavier than LiPo, and far more forgiving of the mistakes a first-time owner makes.

NiMH is the older rechargeable chemistry. It gives less punch and less run time than LiPo, but it tolerates being left on a shelf half-charged, being fully drained, and being charged on a simple charger — all things that shorten a LiPo's life.
What it does well
- Far more tolerant of neglect than LiPo, which suits a household new to the hobby
- Can be charged with the simple charger that comes with many Traxxas cars
- Works with Traxxas' iD system, which sets the charger up automatically
What it does badly
- Heavier and slower than a LiPo of the same capacity — the car feels duller
- Shorter run time for the same size pack
- Most people replace it with a LiPo within a few months anyway
