RC car batteries and chargers, explained

Run time is the number one disappointment after an RC car is unwrapped. Twenty minutes of driving, then ninety minutes of waiting — and that is the point at which the car goes into a cupboard. This section exists so that does not happen.

The one-sentence answer

Buy a second battery. It costs a fraction of the car, it doubles the session immediately, and it is the single most effective thing you can add to an RC car gift.

The two chemistries

LiPo — lithium polymer — is the performance standard: lighter, faster, and it holds its power until it stops rather than fading. It needs a balance charger and it has rules about storage. NiMH is the older chemistry: heavier and slower, but it tolerates being left half-charged, run flat, and charged on a simple charger. For a household new to this hobby, that forgiveness is often worth more than the performance. LiPo vs NiMH works through the choice in full.

What the numbers on a battery mean

  • mAh — capacity, so how long it runs. This is the number that decides your afternoon.
  • S — cell count, so voltage. 2S is about 7.4V; 3S about 11.1V and noticeably faster. It must be within the range the car's speed control supports.
  • C — discharge rate. For bashing, 25C and up from a reputable brand is plenty, and it is the most over-marketed number on the label.

The safety rules, in four lines

  1. Charge LiPo in a fire-resistant bag or a metal tin, and never unattended. That is the whole safety story.
  2. Never store a LiPo fully charged. Use the storage-charge setting, or run it to about half before it goes on a shelf.
  3. Stop driving when the car goes noticeably slow. Running a LiPo flat damages it permanently.
  4. A swollen pack is a dead pack. Do not charge it; dispose of it properly.

None of that makes LiPo dangerous in normal use — millions of people run them without incident. But a gift recipient who has never owned one deserves to be told, which is why we state it plainly rather than burying it.

Questions people ask

How long do RC car batteries last?
Typically 15 to 30 minutes of driving per charge, against a charge time of one to four hours. The pack itself lasts two to four years with reasonable care, or a single season if stored fully charged and run flat repeatedly.
Is LiPo or NiMH better?
LiPo on performance — lighter, faster, longer run time. NiMH on forgiveness, which makes it the better first battery for a family new to the hobby. Many entry hobby cars ship with NiMH for exactly that reason.
Do I need a special charger for an RC car battery?
For LiPo, yes: a balance charger, which manages each cell in the pack individually. NiMH is less demanding, though most hobby chargers handle both if you select the right chemistry.
How many batteries should I buy?
Two, as a minimum. One battery means a twenty-minute session followed by a long wait, which is the most common complaint about an RC car as a gift.
Are RC car battery connectors universal?
No, and this is the most common ordering mistake. XT60, Deans, EC3, Traxxas and Tamiya plugs are all in use. Check the plug on the car first, or buy an adapter lead at the same time.
