The short version

Shock & Servo is free to read and reader-supported. When you click a product link here and buy something, we may earn a small commission from the retailer. You pay exactly the same price — the commission comes out of the retailer’s margin, not your pocket.

What an affiliate link is

It is an ordinary link to a product page with a tracking code attached, so the retailer knows the visit came from us. On this site those links pass through a short redirect before reaching the retailer, which is how we keep every link in one place and can update a destination without rewriting an article. Every one of them is marked with #ad and carries the technical tags search engines expect on a paid link.

Which retailers we use

Amazon, at the time of writing. We may add other retailers in future where they genuinely serve the reader better — a brand’s own store with better stock or a better warranty, for example. Where we link to a retailer we earn nothing from, such as a manufacturer’s specification page cited as a source, that link simply earns us nothing and is there because it is useful.

The rules we hold ourselves to

• Commission never decides a recommendation. Where a cheaper product is the better buy, it ranks first. Several pages here recommend budget brands over premium ones for exactly that reason.
• We do not list a product we would not give as a gift.
• We state the downsides. Every roundup says what each pick does badly.
• We do not fabricate prices, ratings or specifications. There are no price figures anywhere on this site — every button goes to the live listing so you see the real price today.
• We do not claim to have tested these products. Our methodology page sets out exactly what our recommendations are based on instead.
• A disclosure appears on the page itself, above the first affiliate link, on every page that recommends products — not only here in the footer.

What we do with data

Clicking an affiliate link passes you to the retailer, who will set their own cookies under their own privacy policy. We record aggregate analytics about which links are clicked, so we know which recommendations are useful. We do not sell reader data. See our privacy policy for the detail.
